The sensor with a “ratiometric output” means that the sensor’s electrical output signal will change in proportion to the change in a supply voltage. Ratiometric sensors are the unamplified sensors without the built-in power-supply regulation.
Ratiometric Architecture of Safran Colibrys Accelerometers
SAFRAN Colibrys capacitive MEMS accelerometers’ electronic design is ratiometric – it utilizes the internal voltage reference (Vmid), which is derived directly from the power supply line (Vdd). This design choice provides users with the two main advantages:
Integration and Digitilization of Ratiometric Sensors
Safran Colibrys datasheets contain the chapter “Recommended Circuit”, which gives the full list of recommendations for the optimal integration of ratiometric accelerometers. Power supply management section points out that the low-noise, high-stability and low-thermal drift power supply is indispensable for correct bias, scale factor, noise and thermal accelerometer performances.
In order to preserve accelerometers’ ratiometric proprietaries during the digitalization process, ratiometric ADC is recommended. Ratiometric ADC has a very low dependency from power supply variations, which are often caused by system’s temperature change, turn-on-turn-off and coupling with adjacent systems – climate control, ventilation, heating. As ratiometric ADC will deliver output measurements automatically adjusted to the variation of power supply (in V/V units), the amount of scaling required to return the appropriate units will be reduced and signal treatment time will be shortened.
In order to obtain the best device performance, particular attention must be paid to the proximity analog electronics. A proposed circuit that includes a reference voltage, the sensor decoupling capacitors and output buffers is described in the figure below.
Optimal acceleration measurements are obtained using the differential output (OUTPs-OUTNs). If a single-ended acceleration signal is required, it must be generated from the differential acceleration output in order to remove the common mode noise.
Block Diagram & Schematic
The main blocks that require particular attention are the power supply management, the accelerometer sensor
electronic and the output buffer. The following schematic shows an example of VS1000 implementation.
The accelerometer output is ratio-metric to the power supply voltage and its performance will directly impact the accelerometer bias, scale factor, noise or thermal performance. Therefore, a low-noise, high-stability and low thermal drift power supply is recommended. Key performance should be:
The power supply can be used as an output signal (VDD_S) in order to compensate any variation on the power supply voltage that will impact the accelerometer signal (ratiometric output).
The electronic circuit within the accelerometer is based on a switched-capacitor architecture clocked at 200 KHz. High-frequency noise or spikes on the power supply will affect the outputs and induce a signal within the device bandwidth.
Accelerometer Sensor
The sensor block is composed of the VS1000 accelerometer and the 3 decoupling capacitors: C1, C2 and C3. These capacitors are mandatory for the proper operation and full performance of the accelerometer. We recommend placing them as close as possible to the VS1000 package on the printed circuit board.
Output Signal Conditioning
The output buffer must be correctly selected in order match the VS1000 output impedance and signal bandwidth. The AD8571 is proposed for the acceleration output (OUTP & OUTN) and the temperature output (TEMP).
Colibrys is releasing its new vibration sensor, the VS1000, which brings capacitive transducers to a new level of performance. The second generation of the Colibrys VS family, this new vibration sensor features an innovative low-noise ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit), along with an exceptionally stable MEMS (micro-electromechanical system) device offering proven performance, and hermetically-sealed ceramic packaging to ensure robustness and durability. With the VS1000, Colibrys further strengthens its best-in-class position for vibration sensors in the 0 to 2 kHz band.
The market for vibration sensors is booming: the market is expected to reach more than $34 billion dollars by 2020 (Research & Markets, 2015). Colibrys’ VS1000 can provide very precise health monitoring of structures, machinery or transportation infrastructures, thereby reducing operating costs, for example through preventive maintenance.
With the VS1000, Colibrys addresses a wider section of the market that has been dominated by piezoelectric (PE) and piezoresistive (PR) technologies. The advantages of variable capacitance transducers such as those used in the VS1000 include long-term durability and greater accuracy at high temperatures, and at all frequencies, including lower frequencies due to its exceptional stability. By drawing on 10 years of feedback from existing applications, Colibrys has also solved the issue of shock resistance, even repetitive shocks. The sensor also includes a smart built-in test feature, since this function is considered very important in one of Colibrys’ key markets, safety-critical systems.
Colibrys has more than 30 years of experience in MEMS technology. The company is specialized in high-performance sensors designed to address today’s most demanding critical applications.
“We are proud to announce the VS1000,” said Colibrys CEO Patrick Gougeon. “This sensor embodies our state-of-the-art expertise and is the first example of a new generation of variable capacitive MEMS sensors that will consolidate our position in the high-end accelerometer segment. Our technology has proven to be superior to the existing piezo-based products. We are now working on enhancing the performance scope of MEMS, since we believe that high-end accelerometers will soon be largely MEMS-based, because of their inherent advantages in terms of size, power consumption, robustness, stability and price.”
The VS1000 is currently available in various g-ranges. Samples can be ordered on the Colibrys website or through conventional distribution channels.
